Of Merciless Virus and the Reunion
Phew.To be honest,i was actually interested about this morning's career seminar.Probably one of those few rare moments when im actually excited about a school organised event.I guess,i just want to know my career options? What to expect in a certain industry etc.Weird that they dont have the music industry people coming down.I wouldve been really excited for that.Haha.Anyway,here goes:
I went first to the Performing Arts talk.It was held in LT3,and everyone was there on time. For some reason the talk started later. But anyway,it was pretty boring really. Not because of the topic, but the speakers. They seem to have very little hope on their on career.Hope for them, seems to be bleek. They kept discouraging us to join the industry, saying that it has low pay,it is tough,it is difficult to manage, long hours, yada yada.I mean, someone might be really interested in theatre works, and you just dismiss their ideas like that? Not everybody has such a strong idea about what they want to do.At least not yet,at a tender age of 18.I asked a question, regarding the future of performing art,and when it might be able to rival BroadWay.(That second question was really just to make things a little, more lively?)I dont know. The guest speakers were pretty dead. One of them is a ex-student of NYJC,doing low end theatre works. The other is the director of various theatre productions, and our very own Drama Club production too.Anyway,he talks.A lot.Too much.Really.And everytime i try to put up my hand,he'll continue speaking nonstop. He didnt answer my first question, but nevermind.I guess extremely passive people like him must have tried really hard to think about the pathetic future of performing arts.Oh well,it didnt seem like a career for me anyway. It was pretty boring. We had a break, and Ahmad and I went around the school talking about anything we saw.Haha.You know how it is when you put us together. We went for the Media talk, and the speaker was extremely dead.Though i was interested int he topic, especially radio stations as well as journalism,i was bored to tears by the speaker.Ahmad and I got bored,so we decided to head down to the guitar room to jam.Since he had the key to the room,it wasnt difficult breaking in.Sneaked out, pretending we had a stomachache, and sneaked into the room. Before i tell you guys about the songs,we've decided to join the "WoodStock".A performance by the rock bands of NYJC.Wouldnt be surprised that Nigel and gang would join. That monster's got a record label signed for christ's sakes.Thats pretty damn impressive to me.Argh.Jealousy,hell yeah.Anyway,we went into the room, and jammed "My Stupid Mouth","Penny and Me" and "Champagne Supernova".Ahmad showed off a little by playing "Why Georgia" and "Hotel California",both deemed impossible by me.You watch out Ahmad,I'll catch up with you soon enough.Argh.One and a half year head start has got nothing on me.Haha.We rushed back to the hall just when Valerie messaged us about the talk's conclusion.Got back just in time to pack my bags.We were all packed, and ready to eat lunch by 1230nn.Valerie,Ahmad and I headed for the coffeeshop outside of school and had lunch.Ahmad is a big fan of chicken rice, and that chicken rice store provided the closest and cheapest chicken rice around.Anyway,as we walked pass the stores we met Samantha and Jasmine, who were just about to eat at that time.Jasmine invited us over to sit.Though i didnt want to,since Ahmad didnt know them. However,he didnt seem to have a problem with friends of friends, and so we did.
The lunch was fine, until i went to buy drinks. The auntie took an awful long time to get the drinks. When i got back,i was shocked by,something.I dont think i should and will mention it.Wouldnt be nice eh.Said some pretty inappropriate stuff, but i was really trying to comfort her by being funny.Well, guess it wasnt funny enough?
After lunch,Dini,Liping and Agatha met up with us in the coffeeshop, and the whole bunch of us headed for the busstop.Bus came soon after, and we boarded it.I sat with LiPing,Dini and Ahmad at first, but soon moved in front to bitch about Ahem Ahem with Samantha and Valerie. We all agreed that both of them are in the wrong, but she is more wrong than the other.I mean, higher education and being older makes you a better person?Have more rights than others? You are just like the neighbour in the Joo Chiat incident, not worth the time and lives in a well.I disliked you at first, and now i dislike you more.Anyway,we soon reached Far East, and we hurried off the bus.Samanatha was taking a bus to some MRT station,so she stayed on.We went over to buy the tickets first, but the timing was odd.We decided to check out the timing at CineLeisure. It turned out that the timing is equally weird. We fixed our minds on a 430pm screening.Well, its in Digital Format, and its the same price. So what the hell right? We watched The Day After Tomorrow.Haha.Review coming up later.
We had lots of time to kill.LiPing was starving,so we went down to YoshiNoya to catch a bite.Despite having eaten a plate of chicken rice earlier,Ahmad ordered another set meal to eat.The SAJC girls behind us were pretty noisy, and i spent half the time staring out of the window.Young couples, old couples, singles, yada yada.Anyway, its a really special day for me.Seems like I am meeting so many of my friends today. It is almost like a reunion.I met Siang Hong while in the toilet.I went into the toilet, and he called me.He asked,"Hello, are you in the toilet?".I replied that i was,and he said,"Im outside.".I opened the door and he was just about to come in.Haha.What a coincidence.Great to see that small guy again.Haha.Love him man.We talked together all the way from Lido to CineLeisure, had a lot of catching up to do.He's still as crappy, and me too.Haha.Lots of fun there.I sorta left Ahmad and the rest behind, sorry about that. But then again, old friends, and you guys have each other for company. Please forgive me for that?Heh.Anyway,he was heading to CineLeisure to meet his friends as well,so we arrived there and was about to say goodbye when SiangHong ran back and tell me that he saw Cliburn.I looked around the corner, and saw A bunch of SRJC people there.Apparently they just finished their GP exam, and had a class outing.I saw Cliburn, with his weird looking hair now,as well as ZhiHuai and Sandra.Haha.Ok thats really weird. Then when i came out of YoshiNoya,i met Nigel and Jared, who was at that time about to head for the rock climbing competition around the corner.Haha.Cool stuff.Even more coincidental. When i came out of CineLeisure,i met JunRong, alongside Nigel and Jared.Again.Haha.Thats awesome. Its like a mini reunion with very old friends,coincidentally.Haha.What a great day.Met lots of friends.Dont you just love them.SRJC rocks.Oh,not to mention seeing Bernice later on.Haha.She sure looks much better in home clothes.
Review on The Day After Tomorrow
Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) is a climatologist who has come to the conclusion that the world is fast approaching a new ice age. He estimates that the event will occur in 50 to 100 years - until he hooks up with British scientist Terry Rapson (Ian Holm), whose measurements of plummeting ocean temperatures in the North Atlantic advance and accelerate the time table significantly. Vice President Becker (Kenneth Walsh) ignores Jack's warnings, leaving the country without a plan of defense when disaster happens.
Then it starts to happen.First, small temperature drops in floats around the oceans. Then it was the tornados in the city of Los Angeles which wipes the HollyWood sign off the side of the hill. Then it is the raining and flooding of NewYork.Abnormal snowing in England and the rapid temperature drop in Scotland. All this, only measured up to one thing. The coming of the next ice age.People started to panick, and the cities became chaotic.Worse thing was, that nobody can do anything about the situation, and it is worsening with every passing minute.Within days,NewYork is covered by metres of snow.People we caught without warning, and caused lots of damage, especially in coastal regions of America as well as other countries.Soon, the whole Northern Hemisphere was affected by the change in climate,or the retaliation of Mother Nature.Jack's son, Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal), is trapped in New York with his potential girlfriend, Laura (Emmy Rossum), and a group of refugees. They are holed up in the library, or at least that's what Sam tells Jack when he makes a last phone call. After kissing his wife, Lucy (Sela Ward), goodbye, Jack, accompanied by a couple of buddies, heads out into the unfriendly weather in search of Sam. It's a seemingly impossible trek that will involve a walk from Philadelphia to Manhattan in bitter, blinding conditions.
This movie starts off with an exciting bit at the Antartica, whereby Dennis Quaid's character is doing a study on ocean currents, and the ice capes fall apart under their feets. It sets the tone for the movie, and it slowly builds up from there as the movie progresses. It provided a pretty good explanation of the geographical pheonomenon. As a Geography student,it made total sense to me.Though it seems pretty impossible at times. The movie reaches its climax when a wall of water approaches New York and literally consumes the Statue of Liberty. Then the New York skyline is consumed, along with hundreds and thousand of cars and people on the streets.Sam and Laura, just got out in time to be trapped in a library. Then the temperature starts to drop, and the city becomes an icy city.People began fleeing south, and some minorities remained behind. The movie perfectly tells of what people do in times of disaster and panick. How things go wrong when its already very very wrong.Especially the chaotic scenes were very well done. The scene with American refugees tearing the wire around the Mexican border and crossing over illegally. That was a neat part. There are intimate moments during the movie.Like Jack's wife's sacrifise for a cancer patient.Sam's sacrifise for Laurn, who was at that time dying from a wound infection, and Sam,going through death to keep a promise he kept.
I like how Roland Emmerich attempts not to overcome nature's wrath, but to focus on one's ability to survive in the situation. In his past movies,or rather past disaster movies, most director focus on solutions, rather than consequences. And this movie does exactly that.It does have sweet moments, when Laurn hugs Sam,who was freezing to death at that time.Though the movie did have a lot of silly and senseless parts,it was enjoyable. For example,Sam's struggle with the pack of wolves aboard a ship in the middle of New York City. That was a pretty lame bit.Not to mention how the cold air current moves down over New York City and freezes the Empire State Building and everything in its path, but not the library door. The ice seems to come alive and crawls along the corridor towards the characters.Weird.But who cares. Its summer movie. Its a popcorn flick. Its brainless. Its fun.The goal of the movie becomes very personal, when it comes to self survival and not the survival of mankind. When a heroic act is for yourself, and the people around you.Not the whole mankind like "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon".The special effects are TOP NOTCH.I repeat,TOP NOTCH.Its amazing.I mean, really. This film was supposed to be released last year.It was delayed, simply because they wanted to improve on the special effects.Industrial Light & Magic sure did their job well. The waves were amazing, the tornados made the twisters in Twister look like the water swirling into the sink. The wolves, though pretty lame part of the movie, was amazing. The movement of the muscles, especially when it climbed down the stairs.Wolfman of Van Helsing should stay away from this pack of wolves.Overall,i enjoyed this movie, and its brainless fun.:)The will to survive and to make others survive, conquers all elements.Even mother nature itself.
Rating:7.5/10
Ironically,it started to rain while me and Ahmad headed for home.Haha.I was eating my Waffle Cone from MacDonalds when it started to rain.Argh.It became heavier, and heavier, and we were actually afraid that The Day After Tomorrow is NOW.Haha.It was really real.Streets were flooding up,and the rain was getting heavier while lighting cracked across the sky.Just as Ahmad and I wondered about how were wanted to get home without recieving a drop of rain,we started talking about SRJC.How we missed that place.Aquarium,teachers,people,her.Oh well.I shall not continue. Its getting a little long yeah?Haha.I shall end here.Part 2 shall continue tomorrow.
Song of the Moment---Megalomaniac by Incubus
Look Through the Reflection of the Eyes that was set Ablazed
Eyes are the windows to a hidden world.
Opens out into a space unknown.
Ablazed are the eyes, burning up the soul.
Look into this utopia,to this wonderland we go.
